Accommodation
PELS works directly with local residents to provide 2 main types of accommodation:
1. Home stay accommodation (Host families)
To gain maximum exposure to the language, we normally encourage students to stay with one of our carefully selected host families with whom students can converse in English. This is what you can expect from a host family based locally in Portsmouth:
• Your own room: (minimum 9 m square), decorated and furnished to a high standard and equipped with sufficient drawers/wardrobe space and desk/table and chair for studying, and enough light.
• Use of facilities: TV, internet (if available), washing machine, dryer, cooker, etc.
• Food: - Breakfast 7 days per week (Example: a bowl of cereal or toast, tea or coffee) to be served no later than 9 am except at weekends.
- Evening meal 7 days per week (This would consist of a standard portion of cooked main meal, a dessert and a non-alcoholic drink) to be served no later than 8 pm.
• Practice of English: The family will spend at least one hour every evening talking with the student so that the student has an opportunity to talk English outside the school.
• Laundry/washing facilities: The family will provide bed linen and towels, which will be changed weekly. The room will be cleaned once a week so the student needs to keep it tidy on the day set by the family. The student will do their own washing and ironing, unless the family agrees to do it for the student at an additional charge. Keys: Families will give their students a house key, which must be returned at the end of their stay.
We have a number of different host families available, the rooms are priced according to the size, the location and the standard of the facilities. We also provide executive rooms. This means that you will have a much larger room with your own bathroom, TV and internet access.

Please note that you pay the host family a week in advance (normally on Sunday). Money (cash) needs to be given to the host family directly by the student.
If a student goes on holiday and wishes to secure the accommodation, they need to pay half the usual charge for the period while they are away. Please note that this period should not exceed 28 days (4 weeks).
For more information on the minimum standards that the host family is obliged to provide, please contact us.
Students need to leave the home stay accommodation once they have finished their courses.
2. Shared houses and self-contained flats
This is when students share accommodation with other students or live by themselves
This arrangement is on a self-catering bases and the property is fully-furnished. There is limited contact with the accommodation provider. Rooms are available from £85-£115 per week (inclusive of domestic bills) according to the size, the standard of the facilities and location.
